We are searching for a senior solicitor with a commitment to social justice, strong leadership skills and a demonstrated breadth of legal experience supplemented with in depth experience in all aspects of Family Law, Family Dispute Resolution and Domestic Violence Law


As Assistant Principal Solicitor you will have the skills and experience to professionally supervise and manage a legal practice as well as work in the practice. Proficiency and experience in Employment Law and/or Criminal Law will also be highly valued. Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills will be required to manage and develop our legal practice and to work with clients and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. You must be eligible for a NSW Practising Certificate to practice as a principal of a law practice and be able to use your own vehicle for work when required.

South West Sydney Legal Centre is a not for profit organisation established in 1986 delivering free legal services in South West Sydney to those disadvantaged by social and economic circumstances. The Centre also provides legal, support and case management services to women and children who have experienced family and domestic violence. We are known for our proactive and energetic approach to service delivery and community engagement initiatives.

Position details
Essential Selection Criteria:
  1. Eligibility for a NSW Practising Certificate to practice as a principal of a law practice or prepared to undertake relevant training to practice as a Principal of a legal practice
  2. Demonstrated ability to manage a legal practice, including a strong understanding of professional and ethical obligations and risk management
  3. Demonstrated strong leadership and management skills
  4. Minimum eight years’ general legal experience including litigation and advocacy in the Focus Areas
  5. Demonstrated ability to deliver timely, effective and high quality casework and representation to clients
  6. Demonstrated ability to deliver effective, high quality telephone legal information and advice to clients in plain language in a busy ‘phone advice context
  7. Demonstrated depth of experience representing clients in family law mediation or other dispute resolution contexts including in matters involving family and/or domestic violence
  8. Demonstrated ability to design and deliver plain language legal based education
  9. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  10. Excellent computer literacy
  11. Demonstrated ability to efficiently and independently manage a practice’s word processing, administrative and file management requirements
  12. Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  13. Demonstrated commitment to social justice
  14. Current driver’s licence and availability of own comprehensively insured motor vehicle for work use
  15. Ability to work with clients from a diverse range of backgrounds including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with a disability, young people and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
