An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced and skilled Project Officer for Active Citizens to work with people with disability and their families and carers. The position is 3 days per week and is based in MDAA’s Granville office.

The Project Officer role for Active Citizens sit within the supervision of MDAA’s Manager for Projects. The projects aim to provide capacity building to people with disability and provide opportunities and information to enable people to understand and engage in active citizenship. The activities run through this program will allow people with disability to speak up for themselves and express their opinion on any aspect of Australian life that is important for them.

Position details
Essential Selection Criteria:
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Social Science or equivalent experience working in the disability sector and providing capacity building project work to people with disability
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the rights and interests of people with disability
  • Demonstrated skills in project management including promotion and recruitment, skills working with external consultants to ensure delivery of agreed outcomes within agreed timeframes, managing resources, budgeting, evaluation, and reporting
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as undertaking surveys, evaluation of results and preparation of associated reports.
  • Demonstrated high level consultation and networking skills
  • Excellent capacity to manage timeframes and competing priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team environment
  • Demonstrated experience in cultural competency
  • Computer literacy in a Windows PC environment.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills including the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and to work as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop collaborative relationships and networks between agencies.
Desirable Selection Criteria:
  • Ability to lead groups and provide relevant training to active citizens aspiring to engage in public discussion regarding civil rights, participate in political debates, exercise informed choice when voting, understand and participate in the good governance framework for Australia
  • Actively participate in recruitment to ensure the Project benefits as many people with disability as possible
  • Develop and implement strategies for the project in consultation with supervisor and steering committee including developing a calendar of activities for events and projects
  • Recruit a Steering Committee to provide guidance and mentorship
  • Gather feedback from participants, consumers, members, staff and external stakeholders on project’s performance
  • Raise awareness of the rights of people with disability in the community and MDAA services
