Youth Drug and Alcohol Project Worker

The position will be responsible for the planning and delivery of a range of programs including intake, referral and casework support which aims to provide support to young people aged 12-24yrs old with drug & alcohol issues within Miller and surrounding suburbs.


Responsibilities include


  • Consult with stakeholders to develop and implement alcohol and other drugs early intervention and prevention programs
  • Promote and market programs and activities to ensure young people, parents and the community have the opportunity to participate
  • Develop appropriate workshops and programs to build client and community’s awareness about alcohol and other drugs and access and to relevant services
  • Provide alcohol and other drug case management and group work to individuals, families and groups in the community
  • Accept referrals from individuals, families and agencies as well as referring clients to other agencies
  • Advocate for clients to participate and connect with community resources, services and information
  • Undertake outreach to different services and organisations to provide workshops and programs about alcohol and other drugs, health and wellbeing
  • Attend festivals and special events to promote awareness of programs to clients and communities
  • Develop research examining impact of “Miller Hub AOD Project” over the 6 month period.

Position details
Essential Selection Criteria:
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and extensive experience in this area and in related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience working with young people 12 to 25 years and families and extensive experience working in D&A capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding in working with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse clients and communities.
  • An understanding of the issues affecting young people and the community in relation to AOD misuse, early intervention and prevention and harm minimisation strategies.
  • Case Work Experience
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated experience in needs identification, project development and project management
  • Ability to liaise with a broad range of Government and non-government organisations including community and government agencies, as well as local schools, counsellors and other Health Services
  • An understanding of child protection issues and relevant legislation     
  • Developed interpersonal, mediation and conflict resolution skills and demonstrated experience in needs identification, project development and project management
  • Current NSW drivers licence
Desirable Selection Criteria:
  • Experience working with Aboriginal young communities and or from an Aboriginal Background.
  • Current First aid and/or Youth Mental Health First aid
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to cultural diversity in casework practice and experience working with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services
  • CALD background  also desirable
Other Information:

You will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Check, NSW Working With Children Check, hold a NSW Driver’s License and have working rights in Australia.
