The organisation

Financial Rights Legal Centre Inc (Financial Rights) is a community based legal centre in Surry Hills specialising in helping consumers of financial services, particularly credit, banking, insurance and debt. The centre focuses on issues that affect vulnerable and disadvantaged consumers.

Since 2018, Financial Rights has been operating Mob Strong Debt Help (“Mob Strong”). Mob Strong is a free nationwide legal advice and financial counselling program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The program specialises in supporting people with debts from consumer loans (such as credit cards, pay day loans and car loans), banking, debt recovery and insurance (including car, home, travel, life and funeral) in a culturally safe manner. Mob Strong uses this work to advocate for reform to laws, systems and practices to promote financial well-being in community.

The role

The Director of Mob Strong is an exciting new role responsible for leading Financial Right’s Mob Strong Debt Help legal and financial counselling practice. This is a multi-faceted strategic role that provides leadership to the Mob Strong Debt Help team, ensuring that Mob Strong Debt Help is well positioned to promote access to justice for vulnerable First Nations peoples experiencing financial distress and to promote systemic change for the benefit of First Nations peoples. The Director is also responsible to oversee all other functions of Mob Strong Debt Help, including but not limited to media, publications, community education, service promotion and community engagement.

This is a full time 18 month contract with potential to renew. The centre operates a hybrid working mode. Please see position description for further details on the role.

The successful applicant will:

  • Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and be accepted in their community as such
  • Have a passion for social justice, especially for improving outcomes for First Nations peoples
  • Have experience in leading, training, mentoring and managing the performance of teams and individual staff
  • Have strong experience in strategic management and comfortable functioning at an executive level
  • Commitment to quality service provision and demonstrated experience successfully overseeing client service delivery
  • Be a lawyer with an unrestricted NSW Practising Certificate or be eligible to hold an unrestricted NSW Practising Certificate. Must also be admitted as a lawyer to the High Court to practice in Federal Jurisdiction
  • Comply with NSW current public health orders and requirements with COVID vaccination
