The Energy & Water Ombudsman NSW (EWON) is the industry-based Ombudsman scheme which provides all NSW energy and some water customers with independent, free, informal dispute resolution services. We work towards achieving fair and reasonable complaint outcomes for all parties, provide leading customer service and influence energy and water public policy. We are not a consumer advocate, nor do we represent industry.

Our opportunity

This role presents an exciting opportunity for a skilled Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer with extensive outreach and customer service experience.

This position is only open to candidates of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. EWON considers that being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification under s 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).

The purpose of this role is to raise awareness of EWON and energy and water issues within NSW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, improve access to EWON by ensuring we meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers and provide support to our Dispute Resolution department regarding individual complaints lodged by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons.

This is a key role at EWON and a fantastic opportunity to work with Aboriginal communities in regional and remote locations in NSW.

Key accountabilities

  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating outreach activities to promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community awareness of and access to EWON
  • Educating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers about energy and water issues
  • Identifying community issues to inform communications campaigns
  • Coordinating and participating in working groups and stakeholder networks
  • Communication with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers about the investigation of their raised matters

To be successful in this role, you need the below skills and experience:

  • Highly experienced in developing community outreach and/or education programs
  • Ability to identify and liaise with a range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders and community representatives
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills
  • Current NSW full driver’s license, and willingness to use your own vehicle (with mileage reimbursed)
  • Capacity for state-wide travel as required
