Are you looking for an opportunity to support individuals and families who have been exposed to the harmful effects of AOD? We are looking for an AOD Counsellor to join our team in the Wadeye community.

This role will suit someone who embraces and understands remote communities, with the capacity and energy to live and work within the community.

The Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Remote Service aims to improve the lives of those exposed to harm due to AOD, by providing harm minimisation, family-inclusive and culturally appropriate support to users, their families and communities through culturally appropriate 'wrap around' services. This includes providing a range of services in the community to support treatment and care options to reduce the harm for clients and their families affected by AOD misuse. Services aim to facilitate sustained recovery.

The AOD Counsellor is responsible for providing AOD counselling services in order for the program to meet its objectives. This position has a particular focus on applying AOD best-practice frameworks to assist participants to understand their situation and develop strategies to improve their wellbeing.

This position will involve the identification and mentoring of a local Support Worker to build community capacity to provide AOD support.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Counselling: Provide a family systems model of prevention, intervention, access to treatments and ongoing support to families and individuals affected by AOD.
  • Group Work: Design and deliver group and educational programs, which focus on AOD harm reduction. Work with participants to increase self-awareness, enhance social connection, provide support, develop skills and engage together to address individual challenges.
  • Information and Community Education: Promote greater public awareness about the impact of AOD misuse and related harms

About Wadeye

The Northern Territory is one of the most culturally diverse places in the world. Wadeye is the largest indigenous community in the Northern Territory. Situated 230 km South-West of Darwin in the West Daly Region. The inhabitants of this community encompass seven language groups and five traditional bands or kinship groups.
