We welcome last week’s announcement by the Commonwealth Government of a National Plan on Elder Abuse, as recommended by the Australian Law Reform Commission in 2017. We also commend the NSW Government’s recently announced trial of a case co-ordination role  for the Elder Abuse Helpline and Resource Unit. This role was recommended by a NSW  Parliamentary Inquiry into elder abuse last year, and will help ensure victims of elder abuse can access the wraparound services they need.

Reform of the Guardianship Act presents an opportunity to safeguard the rights of older Australians.

All Governments must continue to work together to address the pressing issue of elder abuse.
