Keeping Accountable: What's Good About Wood
11 November 2010
The NSW Election on 26 March 2011 provides an opportunity to get political parties and politicians to commit to policies and programs that enhance the wellbeing of vulnerable children, young people and families in NSW. We are seeking your support for the Keeping Accountable: What’s Good about Wood campaign.

The campaign seeks to get political parties to commit to implementing the recommendations of the report of the Special Commission of Inquiry into Child Protection Services in NSW (The Wood Report). The Wood report recommended a comprehensive overhaul of the child protection system in NSW.

The successful implementation of these recommendations will be a significant step forward for child wellbeing and protection in NSW. While the current Government has done much to implement these recommendations through its Keep Them Safe action plan, there is much more to do including the extension of the Family Referral Services to all parts of NSW, the transfer of Out-Of-Home Care and the Brighter Futures program to the non-government sector and the commencement of the program for vulnerable nine to fifteen year olds.

We need all political parties to pledge to as a minimum, match the current budget allocations and to continue these reforms, which are so valued by the community and our sector.

In addition, we are seeking your support to get commitments from all political parties for additional programs and supports for vulnerable children, young people and families which were not in the Wood Report including:

  • Funding programs that strengthen communities;
  • Investment in early intervention and prevention services;
  • Support for sector-wide, funded industry and workforce development plans;
  • Strengthening of service provision at important transition points for vulnerable children, young people and families, particularly from out-of-home care to independence; and
  • Recognition of the importance of stability for child wellbeing (in terms of housing, mental health, alcohol and drug issues, domestic violence etc).
