Overview

In mid November 2007, the Minister for Community Services, Kevin Greene, announced that the Government had appointed the Honourable James Wood to head up a Special Commission of Inquiry into Child Protection Services in NSW that will report to Government by 30 June 2008.

The Special Commissioner acknowledges that the terms of reference are exceedingly wide and cover all aspects of “the child protection system”, involving DOCS as well as other government agencies, NGOs, local government and the private sector.

• Outcomes from peak organisations' forum held 23 January 2008. The Association of Children’s Welfare Agencies (ACWA), in partnership with NSW Family Services (NSW FamS) and NCOSS, convened the Forum, which was well attended by over 100 members. The Forum focused on issues relevant to the special inquiry into child protection services in NSW: OOHC, oversight bodies, interagency cooperation, workplace development, child protection and early intervention.
