Inquiry into NSW health system misses the mark PDF Print E-mail
30 January 2008
The Council of Social Service of NSW (NCOSS) today expressed concern over the terms of reference for the special commission of inquiry into the delivery of patient care within the NSW Public Health System.

“Acute care services in NSW Public hospitals are an essential part of our health system, however they are not the only part of our health system requiring attention.” said Alison Peters, NCOSS Director.

“The Government has a 10 year State Plan that sets a longer term framework for the state, which includes an overall government commitment towards early intervention and prevention. Yet we continue to see the Government focus on the crisis end of the spectrum, at the expense of prevention and early intervention.”

“NCOSS is disappointed that the Government has not included a broader review of the range of health services delivered in NSW within the terms of reference of this inquiry. NCOSS has repeatedly stated that if the Government is serious about decreasing the strain on our public hospital system it needs to invest in health prevention and early intervention services. To focus purely on acute care services, as these terms of reference do, is counterproductive to the long-term sustainability and quality of the NSW health care system for the entire community.”
