NCOSS welcomes Premier’s disability commitment PDF Print E-mail
3 December 2010
NCOSS has welcomed today’s announcement by the NSW Government that substantial funding has been allocated to delivering support and services for people with disability in NSW. This announcement is the culmination of extensive consultation that considered what needed to be done in the second phase of Stronger Together, the Government’s plan to deliver better services for people with disability.

NCOSS Director, Alison Peters, said “we are very pleased to see that the NSW Government has listened and has allocated additional funding to grow much needed services and support. This $2 billion over the next five years is on top of the $1.5billion in the first phase of Stronger Together and will see recurrent funding rise appreciably on an annual basis. This is a substantial investment that will significantly improve the wellbeing and opportunities for people with disability".

NCOSS has also welcomed:

  • The commitment to enhance a person centred approach where the person with disability is supported to become the primary decision maker about their own support needs
  • the decision to close all remaining large institutions by June 2018 with funding to allow that to happen
  • the greater accountability and transparency through annual reporting to Parliament.

Ms Peters said, “the Stronger Together package announced today deserves support from all parts of the community and we also welcome the State Opposition’s position of support for the package which ensures bipartisan support on this issue. This will ensure that people with disability can make decisions about their own needs knowing that there is capacity to meet those needs”
