Announcements welcome but more work to do PDF Print E-mail

8 June 2010
NCOSS today welcomed several of the announcements in the NSW State Budget:

  • Additional funding for neighbourhood centres
  • Record spending on programs supporting people with a disability and older people
  • Ongoing investment in social housing, the Homeless Action Plan and investing in affordable rental housing through the National Rental Affordability Scheme
  • Additional training and support targeted at areas with high youth unemployment

NCOSS Director Alison Peters said "We are pleased to see an ongoing commitment to many programs that make a real difference for people who are doing it tough. The additional money for neighbourhood centres is especially welcome."

"However, changes to stamp duty mean very little for the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people. Low income people can't afford to buy new homes when they are already struggling to make ends meet," she said. "What they most need is ongoing support to help them get back on their feet during tough times."
