NSW State Budget – still work to be done PDF Print E-mail

7 June 2010
The Council of Social Service of NSW (NCOSS), the state's peak organisation for the non government community services sector, has called on the State Government to remember that there is still much work to be done to make NSW not just economically sound but also fair as it prepares for tomorrow's State Budget being handed down.

NCOSS Director, Alison Peters said "There are still far too many people doing it tough. Their circumstances won't change overnight and need to be addressed regardless of who is, or may be in Government. This Budget is an opportunity for the Government to respond to that need in a real way."

NCOSS has argued many times that being fiscally responsible is not inconsistent with being fair and socially just. Ms Peters said "It makes absolute sense to invest in programs and support that help people when they most need support to help them get back on their feet and take charge of their own lives."

"For NCOSS, social and community services are an investment in wellbeing that improves the state's balance sheet rather than just being viewed as a cost," Ms Peters said.

While it is good to see the overall economic situation improve we must never forget that the two speed economy that existed before the GFC still remains. Far too many people struggle, and will continue to struggle, until governments prioritise their needs and invest in programs, services and support that will make a difference to the lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people and communities.

NCOSS will be available to comment on the NSW Budget from 12 noon, 8th June.

The non government community service sector provides vitally important services to the most vulnerable and marginalised sections of our community. Services include long term housing, mental health, drug & alcohol, women’s health, crisis and supported accommodation, family support, income support, disability services, support for older people, transport, legal, domestic and family violence as well as employment, education and training programs.
