Past NCOSS People PDF Print

Over the past 75 years many hundreds of people have been involved in the operation of the Council of Social Service of NSW (NCOSS). This section sets out to name as many of those people as possible. This list will include staff and Board/Executive Committee members starting from the earlier years and will be based on details included in Annual Reports and newsletters.

Where available there will also be reproductions of articles on particular individuals from archival publications.

NCOSS 75th Anniversary

Some notes

  • Honorifics/titles
Unfortunately, the convention of the day in the 1930s through 1950s meant that many names are given with only first name initial. Where the full name is known we have provided that, if it is unknown the gender honorifics of the day (Mr, Mrs, Miss) have been retained to identify the gender of the individual concerned; should we at some point discover their name we will replace the gender honorific and initial with the full name. Other honorifics (Sir, Lady, Dr, etc) have been retained as have degrees, titles, awards and so forth (Phd, DBE, OBE, Esq, etc).
  • Organisations/membership
Where a person's affiliation with another organisation is know it is included in italics directly below their name - eg Family Welfare Bureau. If there later affiliations they are included below the first in chronological order. Where Associate Member is listed it should be presumed that they had no direct relationship with another organisation but were members of NCOSS.
Please note: In compliling this list some of the names of organisations, while based on terms widely used in their day, have since become unpopular, even politically incorrect by today's standards. Whilst we acknowledge that their usage in this list may be considered inappropriate and/or offensive for some readers we would like to stress that our intention is to present the material as a product of its historical context and no offense is intended.
  • Timeline/Start and finish dates
Lists of names in the Annual Reports were generally non-specific on start and finish times. Where a specific date is known it has been included otherwise a generalised date has been assumed from the year of the Annual Report in which the name has been listed. We are working through the lists in a chronological order and hope to complete it in the course on the next few months - where a date is not closed off (eg [1943-] or [1938-1946-] it is because we have yet to find a departure date for that person.
  • Positions
Positions (eg President, Vice-President, Executive Committee) are ascribed to individuals as listed in the various Annual Reports, including the out of date term 'Chairman'. As yet we don't have specifics regarding what actual duties were involved with these positions.
  • External links
Where biographical information about, and images of, any of the people listed is known to exist on other websites links have also been provided to those sites. NCOSS takes no responsibility for the content and accuracy of information listed on those sites.
