NCOSS has been publishing information for almost as long as it has existed. Established in 1935 and fully functional in 1936, the Council produced the first regular issue of its groundbreaking newsletter Social Service in 1942. Books, reports and manuals make up the many documents published by the council since then. Selected complete copies and excerpts of Annual Reports, Social Service (the first NCOSS newsletter/journal) and other publications and documents dating back to 1935 will be progressively added to this archive as they are scanned into searchable pdf format.

1942-46 Between June 1942 and May 1946 there were 42 editions of Social Service published. These news bulletins were reproduced on a Roneo duplicator and ranged initially from 8 pages expanding to 16 pages in later years. The bulletin quickly gained popularity in NSW, and also across Australia and even overseas with circulation reaching 600 after onl a few years. Post-war paper shortages disrupted the publishing schedule in 1945-46. 1946-50 “Social Service” was relaunched in July 1946 as a journal covering a wide of variety of topics, went from strength-to-strength, gaining acclaim and expanding its subscription base. For some time it remained the only publication of its kind in Australia. Although the Council aimed for monthly issues they were sometimes hampered by financial restrictions. 1951-74 The journal was then relaunched, initially in partnership with the Victorian Council of Social Service. The first issue was published in January 1951 and over following years became the Council’s flagship publication. The was published regularly discussing all manner of social welfare concerns. 1975-84 Due to substantially increased production costs, the journal format of the Council’s flagship publication Social Service was discontinued with the October/December 1974 issue. It was then repackaged as a leaner monthly newsletter from April 1975. It commenced a new numbering system, from issue 1, volume 1. After a shaky start the new format soon fulfilled its role as a timely source of information and communication to the Council’s membership. The publication continued in this format until 1984 when it was renamed. NCOSS NewsThe Social Service newsletter become NCOSS News in 1984 and continued to be a vital part of the way NCOSS communicated with its members. Despite the change in name it maintained the format and numbering sequence which it retains to present day. |
