Fairness in NSW – 75 Years of NCOSS PDF Print E-mail

Can NSW pass the Fairness Test?
NCOSS 75th Anniversary Conference
Australian Technology Park
5-6 August, 2010

The Council of Social Service of NSW (NCOSS) will be celebrating 75 years of service and achievements this year with a two day conference and cocktail party – and we’re hoping that you will celebrate with us!

NCOSS has a long history of advocating for policy, programs and services that make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable, marginalised and disadvantaged people and communities. Formed at the height of the Great Depression when hundreds of thousands of people were living in abject poverty, NCOSS has, over the last three quarters of a century, worked in partnership with community organisations and the State Government to usher in immense improvements in the day-to-day living standards of people in NSW. And yet sadly, in NSW today there are still far too many people who do not enjoy the opportunities that most of us take for granted. So what can be done about it? How CAN NSW be more fair?

With an array of dynamic speakers – including our keynotes NSW Premier The Hon Kristina Keneally, the Leader of the Opposition The Hon Barry O’Farrell and Productivity Commissioner Robert Fitzgerald along with speakers Jenny Stanger, Larraine Toms, Laurie Bassett, Mary Waterford, Jane McIvor, and many, many more – we will all look at the issues of fairness, or lack thereof, which are still facing many sections of our community today. We have seen great changes in the past 75 years, what can be achieved over the next three quarters of a century? Can NSW pass the Fairness Test?

NCOSS believes a fairer society is a better society for us all. It is, therefore, in everyone’s interests to care about what happens to the most vulnerable, disadvantaged and marginalised in our communities. Using our 2011 Election document – Vote 1 Fairness in NSW – as a platform for discussion, this conference will investigate themes of equity and respect, of cooperation and integration, of sustainability and of accreditation.

We really look forward to your company at our conference – we believe you’ll find it an exciting and thought provoking exploration of how the people working in the human services community sector have, down through the years, created a positive change for millions of people in New South Wales and Australia. Fairness in NSW is a possibility and we hope you can join us in making it happen.

Program & Registration

The Conference program includes a diverse range of interesting and informative speakers and topics. Highlights include a hypothetical, a panel of political representatives discussing how their party will be a 'vote for fairness' and representatives from a range of different groups within the community identifying what a 'vote for fairness' means to them.  [updated 21.6.10]
