Commonwealth Privacy Legislation Seminar
Commonwealth privacy laws and the Community Sector
22 May 2002

Non-government organisations (NGOs) are now covered by the Commonwealth Privacy Act. Changes to the Act, which came into force in December 2001, will affect the way in which many organisations can collect, use and disclose individuals' personal information.

The legislation gives people greater control over how their information is used and provides safeguards for certain types of particularly sensitive information.

While many NGOs need to comply with the new laws, there is still a lot of uncertainty in the community sector about who the Privacy Act applies to and what it means for an organisation’s policies and procedures.

This seminar provided an introduction to:

  • The 10 National Privacy Principles (NPPs),
  • Which organisations are covered by the new laws, and
  • What you must do in order to comply with them.
